Sen. Tito Sotto Confirms Gringo Honasan’s Appointment to DICT

Honasan will need to give up his seat in the Senate

The rumors might be true after all: Senator Tito Sotto confirmed in a DWIZ radio interview that Senator Gringo Honasan will be appointed as DICT head, replacing acting secretary Eliseo Rio Jr.

“Yes, he was already told before [about the appointment]. But he didn’t go ahead with it, maybe we still needed him in the Senate. But recently when we last talked, he said, “I’ll sign it already!” Sotto said in Filipino.

Honasan currently heads the Senate committees on National Defense and Security and on the Peace, Unification, and Reconciliation.

To prepare himself for his new appointment, Honasan is doing extensive research for his new role. Among his potential assignments include the selection process for the third telco player. Based on DICT’s final timeline, the agency is expected to announce a “provisional” third telco by this month.

Following the withdrawal of Villar’s Streamtech from the third telco race, there are ten companies vying to be the country’s third telco player. These include the Chavit Singson-led LCS-TierOne consortium, NOW Telecom and Converge ICT.
