2018Q1 Budget Mid-Range Face-Off: OPPO A83 Vs Cherry Mobile Flare S6 Plus

The A83 faces a local contender

The price of the OPPO A83 is very, very tempting: At a hair under Php 10k, this makes it one of the more affordable 18:9 display phones out there. Internals: A83 has a newer processor

While the Flare S6 Plus offers a bigger internal storage and RAM, its aging MediaTek 6750T is no match for the A83’s newer Helio P23 processor. Which is why it does not necessarily matter if the A83 has only 3GB RAM compared to the Flare S6 Plus’ 4GB RAM: The Helio P23’s 16nm process makes it a better-performing SoC compared to the 6750T’s 28nm process.

Display: Just the same

No need to discuss in this segment, as both the Flare S6 Plus and A83 uses a 5.7-inch HD+ display that delivers good colors and comes with that trendy 18:9 aspect ratio.

Camera: Quad cams have its potential

While Flare S6 Plus quad cameras look good on paper, we should not discount the A83’s more conventional single front and rear cameras. Both managed to deliver good photos in our few test shots, so image quality between the two is a matter of preference.

Battery: Long legs on the A83

Aside from having a slightly larger battery, the A83 is, in theory, a better battery performer because of its power-efficient Helio P23 chip. On benchmark tests, we got almost 10 hours in a single charge with the A83, which is pretty impressive if you ask us. As for the Flare S6 Plus, the 6750T processor may be aging, but with proper optimization with Cherry OS, we expect the Flare S6 to be power-efficient as well, but not within the power-efficiency levels of the A83

Verdict: It really depends on what you need

While you get a newer and power-efficient processor with the A83, it misses out on some features. Among these include a HiFi chip, a fingerprint scanner, more RAM, a USB-C port, and quad cameras–features that the Flare S6 have. That being said, both have their respective pros and cons, and it is up to the buyer to decide on what is more important for him with a under-10k phone.
