Check out the new initiative from Google!

Google has unveiled a new program called the Android One which basically lays out a set of hardware and software guidelines for Android device manufacturers to stick to. Basically Google designs all the hardware and software that’s needed for affordable smartphones, and the OEMs and ODMs only need to manufacture it, which should cut down the cost of manufacturing devices. Android One guidelines are available to any Android device manufacturer, which allows anyone to make an Android One smartphone.

So what does this mean? This basically means phones that are under the Android One initiative function more like Google’s Nexus line of Android devices and Google Play editions, though OEMs can put their own software tweaks depending on their market. Google has also said that any device that is included on Android One will get automatic software updates from Google (much like how Nexus devices get relevant Android updates) no matter who makes them.

This is a big deal. If devices offered by local brands are under Android One, those phones will get automatic, timely updates straight from Google as soon as the search giant releases it.

Right now Google is starting the initiative with India, partnering with brands such as Karbonn, Cromax and Spice. During the keynote, Google’s Sundar Pichai talks about a Micromax Android One device that had a 4.5-inch display, SD card, dual-SIM and FM radio for under $100 (or around Php 4388).
