iPhone 4S Showdown: Smart vs Globe

iPhone 4S Speed Test Showdown: Smart vs Globe

Both telcos are now gearing up for their respective iPhone 4S launches. To give you guys a better idea on who to sign up with we’re doing a barrage of speed tests in different parts of Metro Manila using two units of iPhone 4S. One is loaded with a postpaid Smart simcard and the other has postpaid Globe. Both plans have Unlimited Data activated.

Note that this test cannot be 100% conclusive since there are tons of factors that can affect mobile data speed like congestion and weather. Just take this for what it is: a barrage of speed tests that can hopefully help you make an informed decision on which telco you’ll pick. This is important since you’re signing up for a 2-year deal for this phone.

Here are our test parameters:

  • Speedtest iOS app is our main measurement tool.
  • DL speed has more priority than UL speed. However if DL speeds are too close to call we will look at the UL speeds as well and Ping.
  • Server is set to Hong Kong to make sure of telco neutrality in the results.
  • For succeeding tests we’ll do Youtube HD downloads

For the first episode we’re doing three areas in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City. Watch this short 2-minute video that shows the speed tests.

Let’s do a quick recap of the DL speeds:

Starbucks Drive Thru, Fort Bonifacio: Smart (295 kbps), Globe (508 kbps)
Bonifacio High Street, Fort Bonifacio: Smart (1,780 kbps), Globe (653 kbps)
Market Market, Fort Bonifacio: Smart (3,262 kbps), Globe (3,109 kbps)

This puts Smart ahead, 2-1. We’ll do more tests tomorrow and publish them here. We plan on hitting Greenhills (San Juan City), Ortigas, and Makati. Hopefully we can also do several areas in Quezon City. If you have requests please hit the comments below and we’ll do our best to accommodate.
