Meizu MX4 Pro Hands-on, First Impressions: Another Affordable Flagship Contender

Meizu MX4 Pro 09

We go hands-on with the Meizu MX4 Pro!

A few days ago Meizu officially launched the MX4 Pro in China, and while we obviously weren’t able to attend, we’ve managed to get some brief sit-down time with a unit generously brought to the PH by none other than its distributor, Novo7 Tech. A lot of people have been wondering if the new device will hit the PH, and now you know – although it’ll be quite a bit before it finally arrives in stores. But we’re getting ahead of ourselves.

(We apologize if the photos aren’t as awesome as we would have wanted, lighting wasn’t the greatest where we were at yesterday. Check out our review of the MX4 which looks a lot like the MX4 Pro)

Meizu MX4 Pro 02

Hands-on, first impressions: definitely feels like an upgrade from the MX4

When we first saw the MX4 Pro, we mistook it for the MX4 that we reviewed earlier. That is until we saw that it was conpiciously missing the pulsating halo that’s been the trademark of Meizu’s MX series of phones. Meizu has opted to keep the design of the MX4 Pro the same as the earlier MX4.

Meizu MX4 Pro 07

This isn’t a bad thing – the MX4 looked great and the MX4 Pro is pretty much cut from the same cloth. The MX4 Pro looks and feels premium, and much like its little brother, it has an excellent screen to size ratio, with the display taking up 76.5% of the front of the device.

Meizu MX4 Pro 06

Probably the most interesting part of the Meizu MX4 Pro is the sapphire protected glass home button that also acts as a fingerprint scanner. This little button allows you to unlock the phone quickly and easily. It’s leagues ahead over the implementation of other manufacturers, and is probably as fast as Huawei’s own fingerprint scanner on the Mate7. Like the Mate 7, the fingerprint scanner isn’t finicky, and can read your finger in all angles (even upside down) with high accuracy.

Meizu MX4 Pro 04

The Meizu MX4 managed to impress us with its high benchmark scores, and like its little brother, the MX4 Pro doesn’t disappoint. The device is essentially running the same processor that’s found on Samsung’s Galaxy Alpha, though obviously the scores will be a bit lower because the Eynos 5 5430 octa-core processor is powering a higher resolution display.

Meizu MX4 Pro 08

While Novo7 Tech has not yet confirmed the price for the MX4 Pro, they’ve said that it may retail at around 20K when it’s released here, which is in line with the price of the device in China after taxes and other costs are factored in. As for availability, well, it’s still up in the air, and while the company is working feverishly to bring this product in, they did not want to disclose when stocks are arriving exactly. We’ll update this post with more information when we hear back.
