AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution Aims to Upscale Image Quality

As AMD continues to be more competitive on the GPU side of things, the tech giant announced  FidelityFX Super Resolution.

Unlike with NVIDIA’s DLSS, FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) is a spatial upscaling technology that makes use of an advanced edge reconstruction algorithm to analyze features in the source image. It recreates this at a higher resolution and is followed by a sharpening pass to improve overall quality and texture details.

NVIDIA’s approach, on the other hand, makes use of temporal data and motion vectors and incorporates AI for the final output. While NVIDIA’s DLSS makes use of the dedicated tensor cores on its GPUs, AMD’s FSR makes use of the GPU’s compute units.

Despite the different approach of FSR and DLSS, the goal is the same–which is to upscale a lower resolution image. This means that if you are, let’s say, playing a game on a 4K monitor, the game will be internally rendering at 1080p while FSR or DLSS does its job to upscale that to a 4K-like resolution.

However, FSR is open source, meaning that developers can freely implement it within their game or through their game engine. That also means that games with FSR should also work on an NVIDIA GPU or even Intel’s current integrated GPUs. Despite this, AMD is up for a challenge in terms of adoption, as NVIDIA’s DLSS is already enabled in several games and even incorporated with popular game engines like Unreal and Unity

Speaking of supported games, FSR is available in seven titles that include 22 Racing Series, Anno 1800, Evil Genius 2, Godfall, Kingshunt, Terminator: Resistance, and The Riftbreaker.  Aside from these games, FSR is also coming soon to DOTA 2, Far Cry 6, and Resident Evil Village by the end of this year, on top of over 40 game developers pledging support for FSR.
