Its to curb the worsening accident rate in the country

Vehicular accidents are on the rise. Specifically, accidents with vehicles on two wheels have gone up dramatically, with the Philippine Statistics Authority announcing that around 69% of identified transport accidents nationwide are made up of motorcycle-related injuries.

For one senator, enough is enough. Senator Joseph Victor ‘JV’ Ejercito has filed Senate Bill 1822 or An Act Establishing A Mandatory Motorcycle Safety Training Program, and Providing Penalties Therefore, requiring a rider to first undergo mandatory safety riding training before they can purchase a motorcycle.

“Motorcycle riders have been the top victims of road crashes in Metro Manila since 2010. In Metro Manila alone, the Accident Recording and Analysis System of the Metro Manila Development Authority reports that motorcycles rank first among vehicles that are involved in accidents,” says Ejercito, a motorcycle enthusiast.

MMDA data showed that a total of 110,025 incidents of road crashes was recorded in 2017, just in Metro Manila alone. To put that into perspective, that’s equivalent to 301.44 average road crashes a day with 1.17 fatalities per day.
