Facebook to Shut Down Nearby Friends by May 31

Among the many features Facebook has to offer on its platform, Nearby Friends was intended to help you find friends that are within your area so that you can hang out. However, things have changed through the years, with users being more cautious about sharing their location data with the social media giant. Facebook has seen this trend and announced that it will be shutting down Nearby Friends after 8 years.

In case you haven’t received the notification, Facebook announced that Nearby Friends, Weather Alerts, Location History, and Background Location will be discontinued by May 31 and that users have until August 31 to download their location data before Facebook deletes background location and location history information for good.

While the said features that Facebook will be shutting down is powered by location data, the social media giant said that it will continue to collect users’ location information for other purposes as stated in its Data Policy. Other uses for location data include personalized ads, posts with check-ins, and Facebook Events.

Despite that, users can still disable Facebook’s access to their location through the Privacy settings of iOS and Android.

Prior to this, Facebook shut down its face recognition system due to privacy concerns.
