Hyundai Is Now The Third-Largest Carmaker

The Korea Times has reported that Hyundai Motor Group is now the world’s third-largest automaker in terms of sales volume.

The Hyundai Motor Group is composed of Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis. Altogether, they were able to sell 3.3 million vehicles for the first half of 2022.

The said sales figure is enough to put the group in the third place, just behind the Toyota and Volkswagen Group which are in 1st and 2nd place respectively. Toyota sold 5.1 million vehicles while Volkswagen Group sold 4 million vehicles. Following the Hyundai Group is the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance sitting in the 4th place with 3.14 million units sold, then Stellantis with 3.01 million vehicles sold.

For comparison, the Hyundai Motor Group ranked fifth in sales volume in the first half of last year.

Just like other carmakers, the Hyundai Group also experienced production setbacks due to shortage in semiconductor. However, unlike other car manufacturers, Hyundai suffered the smallest drop in production—only 5.1 percent. For comparison, Toyota is down by 6 percent, Volkswagen by 14 percent, Stellantis by 6 percent, Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance by 17.3 percent and General Motors by 18.6 percent.

Moreover, Hyundai’s luxury brand Genesis also reported good sales performance, adding significant sales number.
