Infinix, TECNO Sales In The Philippines Jump By 202% This 2022

The Canalys report is out for the global smartphone market so far in 2022, as well as the local one. We took a look at the numbers and summarized the most interesting tidbits of information just for you. Our most substantial discovery was the rapid improvement of Infinix, TECNO, and Itel sales in the Philippines this year; we’ll delve into that first.

This graph shows that most smartphone companies made small strides in growth during the 2nd quarter of the year. Surprisingly, realme rose to first place despite the fact that they are the only company that suffered a negative growth impact within the timeframe. This decline of 21% may not necessarily attribute to a drastic fall in performance, but a readjustment to normal numbers coming off a record sales period.

OPPO, Xiaomi, and Samsung are somehow staying strong and finding opportunities to grow within a crowded market. The biggest surprise here is the jump made by Transsion in the Philippines: the parent company of Infinix, TECNO, and Itel. The group of brands managed to snag a 202% annual growth rate which is optimistic given the global smartphone shipment numbers we’ll delve into later. We infer that this momentous rise can be attributed to the provision of value offerings in the entry-level and midrange by these brands.

On a global scale, it appears that smartphone shipments are hitting one of the lowest points ever. 2022 Q2 numbers come close to the record lows of 2020, when the pandemic sent the entire world into shutdown mode.

This fall of 9% could be caused by multiple reasons apart from a simple drop in demand: a tense geopolitical climate, the aftereffects of the ongoing chip shortage, logistical issues, and so many more. Toby Zhu, an analyst at Canalys, goes as far as speculating that shortage of materials is no longer the issue. According to Zhu, an oversupply in order to meet demand is imminent, but business trends really have been exceptionally hard to predict as of late.

All of these play a part in why the numbers have fallen from grace and their peak just at the end of last year.

Breaking down global demand even further, only leaders Samsung and Apple experienced any form of positive impact within the quarter. Even if there was growth somehow, it is minute compared to the downfall of other major players such as Xiaomi, OPPO, and vivo.

The world is moving in an uncertain direction, and it shows in the current levels of buyer confidence at the moment. It may not matter for those who can easily afford a smartphone, but those who have to calculate whether the investment is worth it may not make the leap just yet.

We’ll have to wait and see how things change and whether or not these changes affect the trends we are seeing now.
