After Lamborghini, Mercedes is the newest automaker to announce plans to effectively abandon sales of internal combustion engines. By the end of the decade, Mercedes-Benz will have an all-electric lineup.

According to Ola Källenius, CEO of Daimler AG and Mercedes-Benz AG, “The EV shift is picking up speed – especially in the luxury segment, where Mercedes-Benz belongs. The tipping point is getting closer, and we will be ready as markets switch to electric-only by the end of this decade.” 

This is why by the year 2022, all Mercedes-Benz vehicles in every segment will have a fully electric model offering. Also, vehicles with Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) will be phased out by the end of their production cycle. Any new model from Mercedes starting 2025 will be an electric vehicle. Ultimately, by the end of the decade, the Mercedes-Benz will have an all-electric lineup.

The shift to an all-electric lineup is not as easy as it sounds. To facilitate all this, Mercedes had to invest roughly EUR 40 billion for the 2022-2030 electrification plan. They have come up with three all-new and all-electric platforms that are scalable and modular: the MB.EA platform that will cover all medium to large size passenger cars, the AMG.EA platform that will be dedicated to performance vehicles, and the VAN.EA platform for its light commercial vehicles. Most of them will share the same Mercedes-Benz EV battery technology.

Mercedes-Benz also gave a glimpse of their newest all-electric vehicle with groundbreaking electric drivetrain technology. It’s called the Vision EQXX and it will be revealed next year. Mercedes claims that the Vision EQXX is capable of over 1,000 kilometers (621.4 miles) on a single full charge. Mercedes-Benz says it doesn’t intend simply to install a massive battery to achieve this range. Instead, the model has the same pack that’s going into a future compact car.
