Ookla: Mobile Internet Speeds in the Philippines Improve this October

Ookla recently revealed its October report for internet speeds, and its data shows that the Philippines is improving for its mobile internet speeds, now posting an average download rate of 38.12Mbps–which is up from 35.03Mbps last September.

On the other hand, fixed broadband speeds dipped slightly to 71.08Mbps from 71.85Mbps in September. This marks the second consecutive month fixed broadband speeds experienced a dip–last August, fixed broadband speeds in the Philippines were at 72.56Mbps.

The dip in fixed broadband speeds for the second consecutive month comes at a time where PLDT and Converge announced a boost in internet speeds across all of their postpaid broadband internet plans. PLDT, for their part, even announced a new plan that offers speeds of as high as 1000Mbps.

With the October report of Ookla, the NTC explains that this marks an improvement for mobile and fixed broadband internet speeds in the Philippines by 412.37% and 798.61% since the start of the Duterte administration in 2016.

The NTC also reiterates that the administration’s new initiatives, which include streamlining permits for building new infrastructure, helped in improving the country’s internet speeds. The streamlining of permits enabled telco companies to fast-track the building of new infrastructures like cellular towers and fiber optic networks nationwide.
