It has been roughly six months since DITO has officially gone live. As the country’s third telco, DITO aims to match what Smart and Globe have to offer. Aside from Opensignal stating that the presence of DITO can help improve the country’s progress in improving its internet speeds, they also noted that DITO managed to match the speeds offered by rival telcos in Metro Manila for its first 30 days of operations. Take note though that DITO’s current customer base isn’t as large or as expansive as PLDT Smart or Globe as of writing.

Looking through Opensignal’s collated data, DITO’s download speeds are better than the competition in Metro Cebu and Metro Davao–the first areas where it began its operations–and is roughly at par with the competition in Metro Manila when it started its operations on May 17. For the next few months, DITO is trailing behind the competition, but Opensignal explains that it is common for initial network launches to lead to a volatile network experience.

“Early analysis is an important indicator, but it’s essential to continue to analyze how the mobile experience changes over time,” Opensignal explains in its report, citing that it is the same situation for TPG in Singapore and Rakuten in Japan.

Things are very different when it comes to upload speeds, as DITO offered better upload speeds than the competition, with Metro Manila having the best upload experience for DITO users. DITO only trailed behind the competition for upload experience in Metro Davao for June to July.

Video experience is a good indicator of internet speeds, and DITO is roughly at par with the competition. Positioning itself in the Very Good category, this means that the video experience with DITO’s network has generally fast loading times and only occasional stalling.

Concluding its report, Opensignal said that DITO’s entry to the Philippines is more evolutionary than revolutionary, which means that its overall performance will change through time as its network matures, has a wider network coverage, and a bigger customer base. The real test will be in the coming months and years, as DITO continues to onboard more customers to its network. Once DITO has roughly the same customers as either PLDT Smart or Globe, we’ll be able to see a true apples-to-apples comparison on the three telco’s performance.
