Just some good folk giving back to families who have made the ultimate sacrifice

As most of you know, 44 brave soldiers of the Special Action Force were brutally killed in Mamasapano, Mindanao last January 25. 44 families of these brave policemen lost brothers and fathers to senseless violence trying to uphold the law. In the aftermath of the tragedy, many people were moved by the story of the fallen 44 and thought of ways to try and ease the pain of losing brothers, uncles and husbands through donations for the people left behind by the policemen.

One such group of people, led by Diday Alcudia, Merlee Jayme, Daffy Johnson, Dimplesx Cruz, Joy Santos, ER Rafale and JC Catibog leveraged the power of social media to try and raise money for the orphans and widows of the fallen 44. What started out as a callout on Facebook for their friends and families to donate what they could soon snowballed into a massive undertaking, done entirely through social media to not only donate financial relief for the families of the fallen 44, but also to the 15 SAF troopers that were injured during that terrible day in late January.

The effort managed to raise around 1.2M pesos (to which Unbox also donated around 5K) which have been already released to the families of the fallen last Feb. 28. Social media is indeed a powerful thing – and we wish that it’s used for more positive things like these.
