Porsche Releases 2022 718 Cayman GT4 RS: A 493HP Dragon

Porsche just dropped the bomb on the car community at today’s LA Auto Show with their new 2022 718 Cayman GT4 RS, among other models. What changes have been done to the already-beloved Cayman GT4? Read on to find out.

The 718 Cayman GT4 has always been showered with praise ever since its release. The favorite of automotive purists, the holy combination of its naturally-aspirated flat-six engine, a 6-speed manual transmission (or the 7-speed PDK) and direct steering feel make it an extremely rewarding car to drive.

With the infamous RS treatment, the GT4 receives the beating heart of the 911 GT3 outputting 493 hp to the crank. That’s a whopping 79 additional horsepower compared to the base car. Available only with the lightning-quick 7-speed PDK transmission, Porsche claims that the vehicle zooms to 100 km/h in just 3.4 seconds and will muscle its way to a reported top speed of 315 km/h. Those statistics beat out the regular GT4 by half a second and 13 km/h – and the latter is not a slow car by any means.

However, there’s more to these upgrades than just adding power. Technological strategies allow the GT4 RS to shed up to 35 kg of weight. A new rear wing and aerodynamic upgrades derived from their race cars give the GT4 RS approximately 25% more downforce in performance attack mode, according to Porsche. The chassis and suspension also get some love, with revamped ratios, vents, Bilstein dampers, new 20-inch forged aluminum wheels, and ball joint technology.

Weissach options will also be made available to those interested.

If all this technical jargon rattled your mind, then I’ll put it simply for you: the GT4RS is ludicrously quick. In Porsche’s testing around the legendary green hell and proving ground known as the Nürburgring Nordschleife, the car blitzed through the track with a time of 7:04.511 on the older version and 7:09 on the 20.8km variant. That’s a staggering 23.6 seconds quicker than the base Cayman GT4 and just 9 seconds shy of its older brother, the 2022 Porsche GT3.

Not familiar with Porsches? The GT4RS will slice cleanly through the German track within a few seconds of the Dodge Viper ACR, Ferrari 488 Pista, and the Mercedes AMG GT-R Pro. Not too shabby for company right there.

Porsche has claimed that the 718 Cayman GT4 RS is one of the sharpest cars they have ever developed. Not just in its overall handling, but its sound as well – you’ll surely want to keep your foot planted to the floor.

718 Cayman GT4 RS Price

The 718 Cayman GT4 RS is set to go on sale in the US for $141,700 (Php 7,132,965 at the time of writing) however we expect prices to be significantly higher if sold here in the Philippines. While it’s true that the amount is quite a lot of change, expect the value of this classic to rise even further if this is the last hurrah for internal combustion vehicles.
