Taking a page out of US President Barack Obama’s “online town hall” meetings via popular social media outlet Twitter, the Duterte administration is planning a similar online event by the end of August. The government aims to reach out to the country’s millennials and tech-savvy youth through the “online barangay hall” event.

“We’re planning a ‘barangay hall’ activity. Just like ‘Twitter Town Hall’ of Barack Obama but this time, a video live stream,” said Presidential Communications Secretary Martin Andanar. “The meeting is about how Twitter can help us the president communicate the government’s message,” Andanar added.

The upcoming “online barangay hall” activity is just one of the many initiatives that the Presidential Communications Office (PCO) is launching to better connect the Duterte administration to the youth sector. When the President assumed office earlier this June, the PCO launched the #PartnersForChange hashtag campaign, aimed at increasing the populace’s participation in nation-building.

Secretary Andanar said that they are planning to launch the online event by the fourth week of August.
