Real Twitter Alternative? Instagram launches Notes

With all the chaos that’s happening with Twitter, its current users are looking for possible alternative where they can share their thoughts freely without the need to pay for monthly subscriptions. In a rather unexpected move, Meta-owned platform Instagram MIGHT be a possible Twitter alternative, as it announced several new features coming to the platform that include Notes.

You probably find it weird, and we totally understand: Instagram is a platform where you share multimedia content, and it’s really strange to see it offer text content with Notes. And it does seem like what Twitter offered in its early days: Meta explains that Notes will allow user to share posts that have up to 60 characters that can be a mix of text and emojis.

To differentiate it from how Twitter does it, Instagram Notes lets you select either followers you follow back or people on your Close Friends list to see them–from there, they can reply to them, where their replies will change into direct messages. “From asking for recommendations to sharing what they’re up to, Notes give people a casual and spontaneous way to express themselves and connect with each other.”

And that’s not the only new feature Instagram plans to introduce next year: aside from a “pass it on” tweak for the Add Yours feature for Stories, Instagram is also testing Candid, which takes a lot of cues from how BeReal works in delivering real-time updates. It’s no secret that a lot of people are flocking to BeReal for its unique take on social media sharing, and Instagram wants that share as well–or rather, maintain its dominance in the social media space.

As for its collab-oriented features, Instagram is working on a Group Profile feature, where friends within the group can share posts. The other feature, which is Collaborative Collections, where users can connect with their friends over shared interests–be it through groups or via DMs.

With all these features Instagram plans to implement, it seems that Meta is giving more focus to this platform over Facebook, especially since a big chunk of the younger audience uses Instagram, and that Instagram has a better chance of competing against rivals like TikTok.
