Sony and Honda Team Up for Afeela EV Car

Sony Honda Mobility officially unveil the Afeela as their first concept car from their joint venture at CES 2023.

It has been three years since Sony unveiled the Vision-S EV concept at CES 2020, and they’re following up with a new model called the Afeela, which is made in collaboration with Honda.

Instead of being called the Vision-S 02, the Afeela is the first official prototype under Sony Honda Mobility, which is a product of their EV venture that was revealed last March 2022.

“Afeela represents our concept of an interactive relationship where people feel the sensation of interactive mobility and where mobility can detect and understand people and society by utilizing sensing and AI technologies,” Sony Honda Mobility Yasuhide Mizuno said.

Despite looking similar to the Vision-S concept—it brings in a 4-door design—the grille has a closed-off design and a light bar with Afeela branding in the center. You still get a high-gloss black roof, along with with the same shade of grey for the exterior and black wheel hubcaps. Sony and Honda promises that the Afeela will be priced competitively against premium automakers like Mercedes Benz, BMW, Volvo, and Audi.

Looking through all the tech that it will pack, the Afeela will make use of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon technology, and will utilize Unreal Engine  for the car’s operating system. The Afeela will utilize over 40 sensors to handle all of its features—from safety to entertainment.

While we did hope that Sony made its own car independently, having Honda as its joint partner for the Afeela is a good choice, given Honda’s knowledge with cars and production. The Afeela will go in production at one of Honda’s 12 facilities in the US.

Sony Honda Mobility will open preorders for the Afeela in the first half of 2025, so you have time to decide if this is the EV car for you. It will be sold in the US first, then in Japan and Europe after that. There’s no word yet if the Afeela will make it to Asia markets.
