The Ryzen 6000 Mobile Emphasizes Better CPU Performance Per Watt Than Its Rivals

Following its announcement in CES 2022, AMD revealed more details about the Ryzen 6000 Mobile series. While the brand highlighted its use of a 6nm-based Zen3+ architecture and the use of an RDNA2-based Radeon integrated GPU architecture, AMD revealed more details about the performance improvements of the Ryzen 6000 mobile processors.

When it comes to app performance, the Ryzen 6000 mobile is touted as one of the first x86-based processors to fully support all of Windows 11’s security features under Microsoft Pluton. With all the improvements made within its architecture, the Ryzen 6000U series–which has a 15w Thermal Design Power (TDP)–can beat the performance of Intel’s 11th-gen U series processors with a 28w TDP.

While the Ryzen 6000U series offers an incremental improvement over the 5000U series, AMD’s new processors emphasize on offering a better overall CPU performance per watt ratio that involves having more cores while consuming less power.

The performance improvements the Ryzen 6000U series offers become more evident with GPU-related tasks, as the RDNA2-based Radeon integrated GPU offers almost double the performance attained by the previous-generation Vega integrated GPUs used on the Ryzen 5000U series–all while still sticking to a 15w TDP for the Ryzen 7.

Even when comparing the 35w TDP offerings of both Intel and AMD, the latter’s Ryzen 9 6980HS manages to outdo the former’s Core i7-11375H, even doubling its overall performance in some scenarios. The same can be said for the 45w Ryzen 6000 HX processors, with the Ryzen 9 6900HX going head-to-head with Intel’s Core i9-11980HK–which comes with a more power-hungry 65w TDP.

On the topic of the new Radeon integrated GPUs, the Radeon 680M used on the Ryzen 7 6800U can outperform the MX450 from NVIDIA and can go head-to-head with GTX MaxQ GPUs. That’s noteworthy, considering both the MX450 and GTX MaxQ are discrete GPUs, and that an integrated GPU like the Radeon 680M can outperform them. Those who prefer a discrete GPU should be pleased to know that the Radeon 6800S can serve as an alternative to NVIDIA’s RTX 3080–even outperforming it in certain games.

With all these figures AMD has presented regarding the overall performance of its Ryzen 6000 Mobile processors, the main takeaway here is that AMD is serious about improving both performance and power efficiency in laptops through improved CPU performance per watt ratios. With the Ryzen 6000 Mobile processors, AMD is trying to play catch up with Apple’s homegrown silicon in offering a vastly improved performance across the board while lowering the TDPs of its CPUs.

The first laptop that will use a Ryzen 6000 processor is the Zephyrus G14 (2022), which will use a Ryzen 9 6900HS processor that’s paired with a Radeon RX 6800S discrete GPU. It will be the first laptop to use AMD’s latest CPU and GPU for laptops, and gets a few improvements like a 16:10 aspect ratio for the display and a built-in webcam.
