The Vivo X Fold Might Just Break The Balance

With foldables slowly being recognized as actual smartphones rather than just novelty devices, there is no doubt on everyone’s mind that Samsung is currently leading the field. The success of the Galaxy Z Fold and Flip are indeed undeniable at this point. However, these devices are still far from perfect as the entire field is still in its relative infancy. Other companies have been quick to look into consumer pain points in order to be the first ones to address them and one-up the competition. The rumored Vivo X Fold is an example of such, and might just find itself a hit if the company plays its cards right. What do we know so far?

As of the moment, a report of Android Police claims that the Vivo X Fold will come with a horizontal mechanism such as the one seen on the namesake Samsung Z Fold, rather than the ones found on the Z Flip and Motorola Razr.

Rumors floating around the space add that the display could measure to 8-inches when unfolded, and have a different type of screen protection material than anything we’ve seen before. This could make sense since there have been concerns of the longevity of current-generation foldables. A 120Hz refresh rate is on the table as well.

If the Vivo X Fold wants to compete with the big boys, then it should carry a worthy flagship processor (at least the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1)  and a respectable amount of RAM for smooth sailing. Reports also indicate a 4,600 mAh battery with quick charging capabilities.

The last but not the least tidbit of information is that the Vivo X Fold could share design characteristics with the OPPO Find N due to manufacturing similarities. We enjoyed using the Find N in our quick review and our feelings about its durability were right on the money: it survived a rigorous set of tests by JerryRigEverything. If the X Fold and the Find N were to have identical builds, then this should be amazing news.

Looking from a long-term perspective, this may be one of the last bi-fold form factors before we move into more eccentric designs for smartphones. After all, technology moves at a blistering pace. It will be exciting to see how openly people will embrace foldables in the future, and if it truly replaces conventional smartphones as the default.
