Twitter Data Leak Compromises Over 5.4M Accounts

It seems that Twitter has been making headlines in recent times. Early this year, the social media app has confirmed that an Application Programming Interface (API) vulnerability caused the data leak of over 5.4 million Twitter users. Now, it has been reported that all these accounts have been exposed in a hacker forum. The one silver lining is that it seems that there is no evidence that data was exploited.

According to BleepingComputer, the owner of the hacking forum Breached was responsible for illegally obtaining and exposing Twitter users’ data. The said hacker exploited the API vulnerability it previously got from another hacker with the alias “Devil”. In addition to the 5.4 million user data leak, private sharing of the data of around 1.4 million suspended Twitter users also obtained through the same vulnerability has been reported.

If that still isn’t enough bad news, security expert Chad Loder says that tens of millions more Twitter data could have been obtained by the hackers using the same app vulnerability. Collected data include phone numbers and email addresses entered on the app. BleepingComputer relayed that the leak may contain over 17 million data records.

Let’s all hope that no data will be exploited. On the other hand, always be cautious of suspicious text messages and emails you receive claiming to be from Twitter.
