Data from online backup service Backblaze ranks Hitachi as the most reliable HDD manufacturer

In the market for a new hard drive? Well, you might want to check this out. Backblaze, an online backup service, has just published a pretty comprehensive blog post about the hard drives that they use for their service, which includes, among other things, the most and least reliable brands of hard drives.

According to the data that the company collected from the thousands of hard drives they use for their service, it seems that the most reliable brand of hard disk drive (at least in their experience) is Hitachi, with less than 2% annual failure rate. Coming in second is Western Digital, with less than 4% annual failure rate. Seagate comes in third, with a staggering 14% annual failure rate with their 1.5TB hard drive.

If Backblaze’s data is any indication, you might want to avoid Seagate’s 1.5TB Barracuda Green (ST1500DL003) drive, which has an annual failure rate of a whopping 120%. On the other side of the coin, Hitachi’s GST Deskstar models had the lowest annual failure rates, with a maximum of 1.1%.

Backblaze didn’t have enough hard drives of other brands (Samsung, Toshiba, etc.) to have a large enough sample size to compare them with the three most used brands mentioned above.

How about you? Does your experience with either of the three brands mentioned mimic Backblaze’s data? Sound off below.
