YouTube Is Hiding Dislike Counts From Public View

Big news out of YouTube today, as the platform has announced it’ll be removing the dislike counts from public view starting today. While the dislike button will still be there, the total number of dislikes won’t be visible to anyone but the creator.

Say goodbye to the dislike count

The main driver of the change? “Dislike attacks” and other forms of harassment that YouTube says have been used as a weapon against certain creators and public figures.

YouTube cites experiments they ran back in March wherein they hid dislike counts from the public, which resulted in fewer overall dislikes and dislike attacking behavior, which the company says occurs at a higher proportion on smaller channels.

Creators will still see the number of dislikes their videos get in the YouTube Creator Studio, and users will still be able to dislike a video to further help the company tune their suggestion algorithm to serve users.

“We want to create an inclusive and respectful environment where creators have the opportunity to succeed and feel safe to express themselves. This is just one of many steps we are taking to continue to protect creators from harassment. Our work is not done, and we’ll continue to invest here,” YouTube said in a statement.
