Canalys: Apple Beats Xiaomi for Second Place in Q3 2021

Despite that Q3 2021 shipments for smartphones fell by 6% due to the ongoing chip shortage, Canalys reports that Samsung remains to have the highest share in terms of global smartphone shipments.

In its Q3 2021 report, Canalys said that Samsung accounted for 23% of the market share, which is the same as last year. Apple came in second with 15% of the market share–translating to an improvement of 3% compared to last year and effectively beating Xiaomi.

Xiaomi goes down in third place with 14% of the market share, while vivo and OPPO round up the top five brands, with both brands attaining 10% of the market share. What’s worth noting, however, is that Canalys included OnePlus under OPPO’s shipments, which is a result of OnePlus merging with OPPO.

With the chip shortage expected to last until 2022, this explains why smartphone brands are releasing previously launched models with slightly different specs. This has been the case with the Xiaomi 11 Lite 5G, which originally launched with a Snapdragon 780G processor only to be replaced with an NE model that has the same design and specs but uses a Snapdragon 778G processor instead.

The same may be said with the Galaxy A52s 5G, which is barely different from the Galaxy A52 5G save for a different processor (Snapdragon 750G on the Galaxy A52 5G, Snapdragon 778G on the Galaxy A52s 5G). However, the chip shortage is more relevant to Samsung with the uncertain fate of the Galaxy S21 FE.

“Smartphone vendors are also having to implement last-minute changes in device specification and order quantities. It is critical for them to do this and maximize volume capacity, but unfortunately, it does lead to confusion and inefficiency when communicating with retail and distributor channels,” Canalys Principal Analyst, Ben Stanton said.
