According to several posts online, the CMF Phone 1 has a unique depth sensor that can see through objects, but users need a third-party app for access with no confirmed software update. A post on X by user madhavkant05 showcases this unexpected hidden feature.

madhavkant05 discovered that the sensor could see through the TV remote and see the internal battery’s layout causing a viral video on X. This prompted Nothing co-founder Akis Evangelidis to explain the situation.

Evangelidis identifies the depth sensor’s infrared light filter as the root cause, allowing infrared light to pass through, revealing the internal structure of thin or semi-transparent objects.

“As a result, we will restrict third-party apps from accessing the depth sensor output through a software update expected within a week,” Evangelidis said, adding that they expect to roll out an update to the CMF Phone 1 soon to address the said camera issue.

The OnePlus 8 Pro had a similar issue before.

This is not the first time a phone had “accidental” X-ray vision: the OnePlus 8 Pro had a similar unusual feature where its Photochrom filter has a tendency to see through objects. OnePlus was aware of the unusual feature and addressed it through a software update.
