Here’s your First Look at RED’s Hydrogen Smartphone

It is best described as a smartphone on steroids.

Remember that rumor mill where RED Digital Cinema, known for its 4K and 8K video cameras (the same cameras used for those big budgeted Hollywood productions), is working on a smartphone called the Hydrogen last month? Luckily for tech Youtuber Marques Brownlee, aka MKBHD, got his hands on two Hydrogen prototypes: one showing the final design of the phone, and the other with a working holographic display.

Compared side-by-side with iPhone 7 plus and OnePlus 5, the Hydrogen looks “very industrial”, and is thicker and bigger. Various materials like Kevlar and aluminum can be found on the phone, along with rubber grips at the phone’s sides.

Among the Hydrogen’s key features is its modular system, which MKBHD describes it as “Moto Mods on steroids”, and its Hydrogen 4-View technology. One of the attachments MKBHD got his hands on is a dedicated sensor module with a lens mount. Other features of the Hydrogen include front-facing speakers, a USB-C port, a 3.5mm audio jack, a 5.7″ holographic display, and Android OS.

It will not come cheap, however: the entry level model, which will be clad in aluminum, will cost you $1,195 (approximately Php 60,150). But then, if that means Hollywood-caliber videos at the palm of your hand, the price may be justifiable.
