Huawei’s Mate 30 And Mate 30 Pro Launched With Waterfall Display, Dedicated 40-megapixel Video Sensor, 5G

Huawei has officially revealed their two new flagships – the Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro – in an event in Munich, Germany today.

The new phones take a lot of design inspiration from Leica, including the circular camera module (dubbed the Halo Ring), as well as the aluminum frame.

The Mate 30 Pro sports what Huawei calls their Horizon Display, that drops off to the side of the frame 88 degrees. The display uses a 6.53-inch FLEX OLED panel with a resolution of 2400 x 1176, with an aspect ratio of 18.4:9.

The display sports a couple of class-leading display technologies as well, including a DCI-P3 HDR, Anti Blue Light capabilities and Cinematic Color Rendering engine.

The Mate 30 on the other hand, uses a 6.62-inch Rigid OLED display with a 2340 x 1080 resolution, along with a 19.5:9 aspect ratio. It has the same DCI-P3 HDR features as its bigger brother.

The new compact design allows the phone to be narrower than Apple’s new iPhone 11 Pro Max, with the Mate 30 measuring in at just 76.1mm. The Mate 30 Pro is even narrower, at 73.1mm.

Despite the narrow dimensions, the new phones have large batteries inside of their bodies – the Mate 30 has a 4200mAh battery inside of it, while the bigger Mate 30 Pro has a 4500mAh battery.

While the Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro still has a traditional notch cut on the top, the Mate 30 Pro’s notch contains quite a number of sensors: there are gesture sensor, twin 3D depth camera, the ambient light, and proximity sensor as well as the selfie camera.

Since the Mate 30 Pro’s display cut into half of the frame’s space, the phone uses virtual keys with haptic feedback on the side to control volume.

The phone uses Huawei’s newly minted Kirin 990 chipset, which has extremely fast 5G capabilities. In total, the 5G version of the phone has 14 antennas, with the phones having 21 antennas in total.

Huawei has made great strides in wireless charging, and have managed to develop a 27w wireless charger for the Mate 30 series. That’s not all – the company’s wireless reverse charging tech can now charge devices 3x faster than ever before.

Huawei has always been at the forefront of camera performance thanks to their collaboration with Leica, and the Mate 30 Pro is no exception.

The new phone uses a quadruple-camera setup, composed of two 40-megapixel sensors: an ultra-wide 40-megapixel f/1.8 sensor for stills, and a dedicated 40-megapixel camera with an f/1.8 aperture Ultra-wide Cine camera for video.

There’s a telephoto camera in the mix as well, and a 3D depth-sensing camera for good measure.

This is the first time that Huawei has included a dedicated 40-megapixel camera for videos, and its feature list is pretty impressive. Aside from being able to shoot at 4K 60 FPS, the new Cine Camera can shoot in ISOs as high as 51200, has 7680 FPS slow motion capability, real-time Bokeh, 4K HDR+ timelapse and dual OIS and AIS for stability.

Thanks to Huawei’s improvements when it comes to the sensor, the Mate 30 Pro has the highest video light sensitivity on a smartphone, coming in at 51200 ISO.

On the other hand, the Mate 30 settles for a triple rear camera setup comprising of a 40-megapixel f/1.8 main camera, 16-megapixel f/2.2 ultra-wide-angle camera, and an 8-megapixel telephoto camera with OIS and 3x optical zoom.

The Mate 30 is priced at 799 Euros(~Php 46.2k), while the Mate 30 Pro is priced at 1099 Euros (~Php 63.6k). For 100 Euros(~Php 5.8k) more, you can get a 5G-enabled version of the Mate 30 Pro.
