Intel will be giving a 2-year extended warranty to its 13th and 14th Gen Core processors, despite no fix for existing instability issues. The extended warranty ensures that those who have purchased 13th and 14th Gen Core desktop processors will have additional support for those who experience symptoms of instability.
This effectively gives Intel’s 13th and 14th Gen Core desktop CPUs a 5-year warranty for most affected models. Affected CPUs include all models that are 65W and higher, which means that the issue impacts flagship CPUs and mid-range ones.
“Intel is committed to making sure all customers who have or are currently experiencing instability symptoms on their 13th and / or 14th Gen desktop processors are supported in the exchange process,” Intel’s Thomas Hannaford said in a statement sent to The Verge.
Intel explained that the cause for the instability issues is due to an “elevated operating voltage”. While Intel is working on a patch to address the issue by mid-August, it notes that any damage caused by the instability issues will be replaced as part of its extended warranty scheme.
“Intel is also investigating options to easily identify affected processors on end user systems and will provide additional guidance as soon as possible,” the company explained in its statement.
