Which is the better mid-range phone with pop-up camera?

Huawei has officially joined the mid-range, pop-up selfie cam race with their new Y9 Prime 2019. Huawei’s first pop-up-sporting phone has most, if not all, important features for a 2019 mid-ranger: triple rear cameras, USB-C, decent battery capacity, capable internals, and a Full HD+ display. Can Huawei’s pop-up mid-ranger go head-to-head against OPPO and vivo’s offerings?

Modern notch-free design for all three

The Y9 Prime 2019, V15, and F11 Pro have a similar design language where all three sport a notch-free, all-screen display and a pop-up camera mechanism. The V15 has its pop-up camera on the right side, while the Y9 Prime 2019 has its pop-up module on the left side. The F11 Pro, meanwhile, goes for a symmetrical look with its pop-up camera placed at the center.

With their notch-free displays, the screen-to-body ratio for all three phones are quite close: the Y9 Prime 2019 leads with a 91.006% screen-to-body ratio, followed by 90.95% on the V15 and 90.9% on the F11. While the V15 and F11 Pro come with gradient color options, the Y9 Prime 2019 goes for a different route with a two-tone finish.

Triple rear cameras for better versatility

While the F11 Pro boasts a 48-megapixel Samsung GM1 main camera, we have explained that phones with high-resolution cameras are not megapixel monsters; they all make use if pixel-binning tech, effectively snapping 12-megapixel photos in reality.

As for the V15 and Y9 Prime 2019’s triple rear camera setup, the addition of an ultra-wide-angle camera gives both phones added versatility for both photos and videos. While all three come with the usual AI features, the Y9 Prime 2019 and F11 Pro come with their own form of night mode for capturing better photos in low light. Factoring the Y9 Prime 2019’s price, Huawei’s offering offers great value for money in the camera department.

Kirin 710 still showing some muscle

The Y9 Prime 2019’s Kirin 710F  processor can go head-to-head against the V15 and F11 Pro’s Helio P70 processor. While the Y9 Prime 2019 is using a different variation of the Kirin 710, we have to do our usual battery of tests to see if there’s any improvement compared to the old version.

Vivo and OPPO’s offerings have an advantage in the RAM department, as the V15 and F11 Pro come with 6GB RAM. The Y9 Prime 2019, on the other hand, offers more internal storage at 128GB.

Big battery with some variations

While all three phones come with a hefty 4000mAh battery, the Y9 Prime 2019 is the most modern phone out of the three as it sports a USB-C port instead of the aging MicroUSB. However, the F11 Pro has the best quick charging solution with its 20W VOOC 3.0 tech.

More affordable but can keep up with the competition

While the Y9 Prime 2019 is priced at Php 12,990—Php 3k more affordable than the V15 and Php 6k more affordable than the F11 Pro—Huawei’s offering does not scrimp on specs. Aside from still getting a notch-free display and pop-up front camera, the Y9 Prime 2019 comes with a triple rear camera and USB-C.

If you’re looking at maximizing every peso you have and want to get the most value-packed, full-screen phone for not a lot of money, then you might want to take a look at the Y9 Prime 2019 in Huawei stores nationwide.
