Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 vs Huawei P50 Pocket

While Samsung may continue its reign in the compact foldable market with the Galaxy Z Flip4, it still has a couple of challengers to the throne–and the Huawei P50 Pocket is one of them. Despite what appears to be more of an incremental upgrade to last year’s Galaxy Flip3, are these enough to make it competitive against Huawei’s P50 Pocket.

Design

While both phones do have the same form factor, they differ in their implementation of the cover display and camera module. Between the two, the Galaxy Z Flip4 has a simpler and cleaner look–that is paired with a larger cover display as compared to the P50 Pocket and its dual circle layout.

However, the P50 Pocket has a better hinge design that has practically no gaps when closed and has less creasing compared to the Galaxy Z Flip4. Despite that, Samsung proves to be the leader in the foldable segment by adding an IPx8 rating on the Galaxy Z Flip4.

Display

While both phones use flexible AMOLED displays with a 120hz adaptive refresh rate, the P50 Pocket takes the lead on two aspects: having a larger display at 6.9-inches, and for having a less visible crease.

Cameras

While Samsung incorporated an “upgrade” to the Galaxy Z Flip4’s main camera in the form of a new 12-megapixel sensor with larger pixels, it trails behind with the P50 Pocket’s 40-megapixel  f/1.8 True Chroma main camera.

Both foldable phones are pretty much on even ground as far as selfie and ultra-wide-angle cameras are concerned, but the P50 Pocket has an additional 32-megapixel f/1.8 Ultra Spectrum camera for taking unique photos. Despite those differences in camera hardware, both have capable camera features that include being able to record 4K video at up to 60FPS.

Internals and Battery

Being a newer model, the Galaxy Z Flip4 has the advantage of using the latest Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor, which is more powerful (AND more stable) than the Snapdragon 888 used on the P50 Pocket. The Galaxy Z Flip4 is on even ground with the P50 Pocket as it now offers up to 512GB internal storage, though Huawei’s compact foldable can be availed with up to 12GB RAM (the Galaxy Z Flip4 is limited to 8GB RAM).

We appreciate that Samsung added a bigger 3700mAh battery on the Galaxy Z Flip4, along with faster 25w wired and 15w wireless charging. However, it still trails behind the P50 Pocket’s 4000mAh battery and 40w wired charging–at the expense of no support for wireless charging.

Price

Currently, the P50 Pocket is priced at Php 59,999 for the regular 8GB/256GB model and Php 75,999 for the premium 12GB/512GB model. On the other hand, the Galaxy Z Flip4 is priced at Php 58,990 for the 128GB variant, Php 62,990 for the 256GB variant, and Php 69,990 for the 512GB variant.

The Galaxy Z Flip4 is expected to be more expensive than the P50 Pocket since it’s a newer model, though customers by be more inclined to Samsung’s new compact foldable for its Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor and having an IPx8 rating.
