Samsung’s Exynos 1080 is the First Processor to Use Cortex-A78 Cores

Not to be left behind the 5nm train, Samsung formally unveiled its first 5nm-based chip with the Exynos 1080. Manufactured using Samsung’s 5nm EUV FinFET process, Samsung’s new process increases transistor count density by 80% compared to its 7nm process. This makes the Exynos 1080 deliver 7% better performance and 18% better power consumption compared to 7nm DUV processes.

Going to the chip itself, the Exynos 1080 utilizes a 1/3/4 core configuration. You get a top-performance Cortex-A78 core running at 2.8Ghz, three high-performance Cortex-A78 cores running at 2.6Ghz, and four efficiency Cortex-A55 cores running at 2.0Ghz. For the GPU, the Exynos 1080 utilizes a Mali-G78 MP10. As a 5G-ready processor, the Exynos 1080 supports both sub-6Ghz and mmWave frequencies, along with support for Cat18 LTE, WiFi 6, and Bluetooth 5.2

Other key features of the Exynos 1080 include support up to 200-megapixel cameras (or dual 32-megapixel cameras), 4K video recording at 60FPS, WQHD+ displays at 90Hz, Full HD+ displays at 144hz, and the latest UFS 3.1 storage and LPDDR5 RAM standards.

The first phones using the Exynos 1080 are expected to arrive in early 2021.
