Xiaomi Debuts the Mi 5X Alongside the MIUI 9

Right on time and packing the rumored specs as well.

Xiaomi‘s long-leaked Mi 5X is now finally official. The Chinese electronics firm unveiled the handset earlier today, alongside the version update of their homebrew OS, the MIUI 9.

As previously gossiped, the Xiaomi Mi 5X will indeed ship with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 chipset paired with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage. The smartphone’s dual rear cameras are both of the 12-megapixel variety, similar to the earlier released Xiaomi Mi 6’s setup.

The Xiaomi Mi 5X has a price tag of $225 (~Php 11.5K) and is available in shades of Black, Gold, and Rose Gold. No word yet on future pricing and availability outside mainland China.

Nougat-based MIUI 9 was also part of the unveiling earlier today, and it comes with three new key features for its users: Image Search, Smart App Launcher and Smart Assistant. For now, MIUI 9 will only be available for users in China. It will be seeing a global roll-out in the coming months.

The Image Search feature is similar to Google’s Photos app search function, where users can sift through images by inputting keywords relevant in the picture. The Smart App Launcher allows for app launching based on the user’s screen contents. Lastly, the Smart Assistant is another search app, similar to the Google Assistant in that it can find anything, from photos to text.
