Will Qualcomm Seal a Deal with Intel?

With computers headlining AI as their main feature with the likes of Apple Intelligence and Microsoft Copilot, the battle between chipmakers include not just stellar battery life, but also the muscle power to handle those AI tasks. AMD, Intel, and Qualcomm have recently launched processors that focus heavily on AI, and a new report said that Qualcomm approached Intel for a possible takeover a few days ago.

This is a big development for Intel following Reuters’ report that Sony chose to stick with AMD for the upcoming PlayStation 6–and that Intel is facing rough times lately, following reports of layoffs and losing nearly 60% value of its shares.

ASUS’ VivoBook S 15 is among the first laptops to use the Snapdragon X Elite.

According to Reuters’ report, Qualcomm has been exploring the possibility of acquiring parts of Intel’s design business—specifically for its PC design unit—which should help Qualcomm in its foray into PCs with its Snapdragon X chips. Qualcomm depends on TSMC for manufacturing its chips, and the possible deal should help them utilize Intel’s chip fabrication business.

The possible takeover is at its early stages, and both Intel and Qualcomm declined to comment on the matter. While this should be a win-win for both parties—it should benefit both Intel and Qualcomm—antitrust regulators might scrutinize the said deal.
