Facebook to Allow GIFs For Profile Photos

Harry Potter reference, anyone?

Facebook is planning to rollout a new feature that will probably delight Harry Potter fans and nostalgic MySpace users – the use of GIFs as profile photos. Well, not exactly a GIF – Facebook says that users will soon be able to record a short, looping video for their mobile profile photo.

That’s not the only change that the company is adding to profiles – soon users can set a temporary profile photo that reverts to your original photo after a set amount of time, allowing friends, family and co-workers to see at a glance what’s happening with your life. Want to go on vacation without people bothering you with inane questions through the messenger app? Put a big, ON VACATION label on your profile photo to clue everybody in that’ll automatically revert as soon as you get back. Want to show your support for a cause like gay pride? Set them up and put a timer on them so they’ll stay up for a specific amount of time.

Facebook is testing the new feature with select iPhone users in California and the UK, but is eyeing a wider release soon.
