realme 8 Pro Unboxing, Quick Review: Big Camera Leap

Initial Verdict: Yes, the realme 8 Pro inherits a lot of the same hardware from the previous model but, undeniably, the main focus for this device is its main camera. Aside from all the adverts you see online for the 108-megapixel main shooter in the Philippines, the overall design language of the camera array accentuates what this phone is all about. It may not pique the interest of those who may be looking for as much power as they can get for a mid-range phone but, for people who put camera performance above all else, this could be a viable option.

Pros

  • Big Bump in Megapixel Count for the Main Camera
  • Insane Charging Speeds

Cons

  • Share a Lot of the Same Hardware from the Previous Model

It’s been a hot minute since we’ve learned about the newest member of realme’s numbered series of smartphones — the realme 8 Pro. With its launch in the Philippines coming very soon, the company has sent it over for us to check what it and it’s 108-megapixel main camera is all about.

Packaging and Contents

No surprises here. The realme 8 Pro comes in the company’s signature yellow box with phone’s model name clearly printed on the front of the box with some of its more notable specs on the back. Inside the packaging, we’re getting the usual suspects when it comes to the accessories.

We have the device itself. Ours came in the Infinite Black colorway and has 8GB of RAM and 128GB of expandable storage. There’s the usual set of documents, a SIM ejector pin, and jelly case that comes inside a separate cardboard box that welcomes you into the realme family.  Aside from that, we have the USB-C cable and the 50w Dart Charger.

Design

In terms of design, realme went extremely bold with this one with their company slogan etched on to the back of the phone in a glossy finish. This is a nice contrast from the sand-blasted texture on the back of the phone, which is a great way to repel smears and smudges if you plan to use this device without a case.

The device is primarily made out of plastic but still has a good amount of heft to it and the right amount of curves to make it sit in the hand nicely.

As mentioned, we got this in the Infinite Black colorway but we are curious to see what the Illuminating Yellow version of this phone is like. With what we’ve seen on the videos from their international websites, parts of it glow in the dark. It’s definitely going to be a point of contention but it definitely is unique and a way for the phone to stand out.

As far as the button and ports are concerned, it’s pretty much the same layout we’ve been seeing from most smartphones with the volume rocker and power button on the right side.

We have access to the triple-slotted SIM tray on the left.

There’s only a mic up on top, which means most of the action is on the bottom of the phone where you’ll find the headphone jack, another mic, the USB-C port, and the speaker grille.

Display

As mentioned above, you are getting a lot of the same hardware from the previous version of this device and one of them is the display. We’re getting a 6.4-inch Full HD screen with the realme 8 Pro. Thankfully, they retained the Super AMOLED panel that we generally favor but the refresh rate is only at 60Hz. While having a higher refresh rate display isn’t a must have for smartphones it definitely contributes to an overall snappier experience with the device.

That being said, consuming content such as the K-Pop M/Vs that you typically see in our photos and video have been great, which is the important bit.

Cameras

As you guys may have noticed, the realme 8 Pro has a punch hole on the top-left hand corner of the screen, which is where we’ll find the 16MP front camera at an aperture of f/2.5.

The main star for this device, however, is that 108MP main camera that’s housed in a very prominent camera array. It has an aperture of f/1.9 that’s backed by a Samsung HM2 sensor and features PDAF or Phase Detection Autofocus. This is paired with an 8-megapixel ultra-wide, a 2-megapixel macro lens, and a 2-megapixel B&W camera.

Performance and Battery

For the processor, the realme 8 Pro has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G under the hood that’s been paired with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of expandable storage. We would have loved to see them update the chipset of the device to something a bit more current but the 720G is still very capable for day-to-day tasks and a bit of gaming as well.

Keeping the lights on for the realme 8 Pro is a 4500mAh battery with support for the company’s 50W Dart Charging that’s advertised to give us 50% in just 17 minutes. Great if you’re like some of the members of the team (myself included) who forget to top up their devices before heading out for essential errands.

Wrap up and conclusions

The realme 8 Pro looks to be a solid upgrade for people who wanted a better camera module on the previous model, though we’ll still have to wait a little bit to see where it fits in realme’s current product stack here in the Philippines.
