Facebook Messenger App Silently Adds Notes Feature

After Meta transformed Instagram Notes into a separate app called Threads, it seems they are not giving up with the idea of having notes as status messages. To everyone’s surprise, Meta silently updated the Messenger app to incorporate Notes as a status message of sorts for all users.

By this time, most Messenger users are playing around with the new feature.

The idea behind Notes is that they are thought bubbles that Messenger app users can post for their followers and friends to see. Since it is more of a status message, you are limited to 60 characters (emojis included)–giving Messenger app users a casual way of expressing themselves and connecting with other users. The fun part about Notes is that users can directly reply to another user’s note, which will initiate a 1-to-1 chat between the sender and recipient that’s only visible to them. In a nutshell, it works similar to the short-lived Instagram Notes feature–and it remains to be seen if Meta will keep it as a main feature for Messenger.

Currently, this feature is only available with the Android and iOS versions of the Messenger app. The desktop (MacOS/Windows) and web versions of the Messenger app don’t have the Notes feature, so we presume that Meta might intend to make it exclusive to the mobile app version for the meantime.
