OPPO Confirms First Set of 5G Tests

Using a modded R15 as a testbed

Talks of 5G have in abundant in the past few months. There’s Motorola promising a 5G MotoMod module for the Moto Z3 Play, Huawei announcing the first commercial 5G modem at MWC 2018, and Smart doing several 5G tests in its 5G Technolab.

The latest to join the fray is OPPO, which has successfully tested 5G tech on a smartphone using a modified R15. The modified version uses Qualcomm’s X50 modem—the same modem claimed to be used on Motorola’s 5G MotoMods.

In the photo proof posted in MyDrivers, the modified R15 is seen running the 20MHz bandwidth of 5G NR n78 band.

This development corroborates with Qualcomm’s signing of an MOA to provide 5G chips and modems that will be used in next-generation devices. OPPO is one of the brands who signed the MOA.
