Business at the front, RGB at the back

The ViewSonic Elite XG270QG’s is a solidly-built monitor that doesn’t scream “gamer” when you’re looking at it from the front. The stand is big, constructed out of metal, and occupies far more real estate depth-wise on my desk than I was prepared for.

That extra space occupied is well worth it though, as the monitor is adjustable for height (120mm), pivot (90 degrees in both directions) and tilt (25 degrees up and down). If that’s not enough, it rotates up to 90 degrees as well.

It wouldn’t be a gaming monitor if ViewSonic didn’t include RGB strips somewhere in the body, and in the case of the Elite XG270QG, those configurable lights are placed on the back where the monitor attaches to the stand, as well as the bottom of the panel to project RGB lights down to your desk. While the bottom-firing RGB lights make sense since you can actually see them (and can configure them to sync to your rig via ViewSonic’s software), the rear RGB lights are a bit of a waste.

There are nice design touches here too that makes like easier for users, like a headphone hook at the left side, and cable-routing hooks for keyboards and mice.

ViewSonic also includes two side panels to attach on either side of the monitor to reduce glare as well, which is a nice touch.

There are only two inputs for this monitor – a DisplayPort and HMDI port, though if you want to use the display’s fast refresh rates, you’re pretty much stuck with the former, as the latter is only HDMI 1.4, which only has a peak refresh rate of 60Hz.

Other ports include 3 USB 3.1 plugs. There’s also a pair of 2W speakers integrated into the monitor, but they’re tinny and lack volume.

Controls for the monitor are located directly below the Elite logo, and I like that ViewSonic adapted joystick controls for the OSD that makes scrolling through menus easier.

A fast and accurate panel

Getting down to the weeds of the ViewSonic Elite XG270QG in the Philippines, you’re looking at a flat, 27-inch panel with a 1440p resolution and a 165Hz refresh rate along with a 1ms response time. The side and bezels are pretty thin too, which makes the monitor more aesthetically pleasing.

The panel is an IPS one, which is surprising given the fast response times and higher 1440p resolution.

The monitor covers 98% of the DCI-P3 color space, which makes it good enough for more serious applications like photo and video editing. You will have to calibrate the display first to get it the best results from experience though.

One complaint I do have is that the contrast ratio isn’t the best – it’s not a major deal-breaker, but it does reduce the amount of depth in terms of overall image quality.

As far as game performance goes, there’s really nothing to complain about the display. The 165Hz refresh rate is excellent, and while 240Hz is the gold standard nowadays, very few rigs can hit that 165Hz limit without having to max out the hardware – more so for 240Hz.

G-Sync does what it advertises, and if you own an AMD card, you won’t have to fret – the display is FreeSync compatible as well.

Verdict: pricey monitor that makes up for it with premium features

The ViewSonic Elite XG270QG has a lot going for it and is a great multi-purpose display that both gamers and professionals will appreciate.

Lots of thoughtful touches like the integrated headphone stand, mouse cable guide, and additional side panels aren’t usually present on comparable models and are value-added features that many people will appreciate.

While the contrast is a little lacking, the display is still pretty vibrant and punchy, and the presence of tech like NVIDIA’s G-Synch and AMD’s FreeSync along with the 165Hz refresh rate means it’s a great choice for serious gamers.

Perhaps the only thing I don’t like is the price, as the price of the ViewSonic Elite XG270QG in the Philippines sells for Php 37,999  via Shopee.
