The lone Android phone in an iPhone-dominated top 5
While overall smartphone sales have declined due to the COVID-19 pandemic, phones under the premium segment remain to be resilient, contributing to 22% of overall smartphone sales for the first quarter of last year and this year. Breaking down the market share for premium smartphones, Apple remains to be on top at 57%, with Samsung and Huawei trailing through at 19% and 12% respectively.
As for the top 5 selling premium smartphones, Apple dominates the top 4 sports with all three variants of the iPhone 11 and 2018’s iPhone XR. Huawei, on the other hand, snagged the fifth spot with the Mate 30 Pro 5G. That makes the Mate 30 Pro 5G not just the best-selling premium Android phone, but also the first 5G device to rank in the top 5 list.
Counterpoint reports that 5G devices cover around 1/5 of the total market share for the premium segment, with Huawei capturing close to 42% of 5G devices. With Apple expected to launch its first 5G iPhones this year, Counterpoint believes that 5G will be the main driver for the growth of the premium segment.
