2022 Ford Territory Review Philippines: A Spaceship on the Road

I’ve been in very few cars that had enough stunning tech inside of them that would genuinely impress me. That used to be the 2019 Audi A8 L. Now, it’s the 2022 Ford Territory. The biggest difference between the two is that the Territory has comparably the equivalent amount of tech packed into its chassis while being five times cheaper, which means this compact crossover from Ford punches way above its weight as far as pure tech value is concerned.

Exterior

The Ford Territory has an exterior design that’s not hard to love. It’s not aggressive but it’s not boring either. Everything is just in the right place.

The LED headlamps, taillights, and DRLs all give the car a modern look, while the front grille, alloy wheels, and chrome accents give it a splash of elegance. Of course, the exterior isn’t complete without a touch of sportiness courtesy of the skid plate, roof rail, rear spoiler, rear diffuser, and dual exhaust setup. It is also worth mentioning that the car has an overall shape that is kind of similar to a Range Rover Evoque, giving it a premium and very sporty look.

Every angle of the Ford Territory is just pleasant to the eyes, although the top view is our favorite part as the panoramic moonroof is just beautiful to look at, even from the outside.

Interior

If I have a favorite part of the exterior, I can’t seem to choose just one interior feature favorite. There’s so much tech built into this thing that I can’t even imagine how Ford managed to keep its price tag relatively sane in comparison.

Starting with the infotainment system, the Ford Territory has a 10-inch touchscreen display that can be used to view and control other features such as the 360-degree camera, blind spot information system (BLIS), ambient lighting, seat temperature, and of course Android Auto and Apple Carplay.

Right next to the infotainment system is an all-digital instrument panel that changes its layout depending on the mode—sports, fashion, or classic. It also gives you access to the tire pressure monitor, fuel consumption, automatic parking, lane keep assist, and many more.

To control the air conditioning system, you have Lamborghini-inspired switches below the infotainment system. Just as sporty is the buttons for automatic parking, lane keep assist, handbrake, brake-hold assist, and sports mode. There is also a knob, along with some buttons, for easier navigation of the infotainment system.

Although only the front seats are climate-controlled and only the passenger seat is electronic, all seats are made of high-quality leather material. Even the sidings, steering wheel, center console storage cover, and some parts of the dashboard are wrapped in the same leather. The interior is basically made up of several materials: faux wood, shiny plastic, matte plastic,  and soft-touch panels. Not even the Audi A8 L has this number of elements inside. Truly, the interior screams expensive, especially with the huge panoramic moonroof.

As for the overall interior space, the compact crossover has enough space to seat 5 adults comfortably. The legroom, headroom, and shoulder room are very spacious. However, the cargo space is a bit tight so you might have to fold the rear seats in case you need more room.

Drive and fuel economy

The Ford Territory comes with a 1.5L turbocharged engine that’s just right for its size. It had no problem conquering the hills of Binangonan, Rizal. Overtaking in the city was also as smooth as a breeze. Should you need a bit more oomph, the sports mode is just a click away.

There is nothing to complain about the CVT transmission either. It transfers the power from the engine to the front wheels with notable smoothness. Gear changes are seamless and you will never feel the turbo kicking in.

As for the ride, it totally drives like a car. It can handle road bumps very well, even when loaded. This is because the suspension setup is more on the soft side. The downside of this soft suspension setup is that it makes the body roll or bend, especially when cornering or braking hard. It also dampens the steering input, making the car less sporty to drive. Thankfully, the disc brakes at the front and rear are able to provide a good amount of stopping power.

In addition, the car comes with a lot of useful advanced driver assists systems (ADAS) such as Autonomous Emergency Braking, Adaptive Cruise Control with Forward Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning,  Enhanced Active Park Assist System, Parallel/Perpendicular Parking Assist, and Blind Spot Information System. Meanwhile, it comes with 6 SRS airbags and Electronic Stability Control for safety.

Sad to say, fuel economy is not a forte of this car. Throughout our entire journey, we were able to manage just 7.4km/L combined.

Wrap up and verdict

With all its tech and features, the Ford Territory will give you the feeling of driving a spaceship on the road, especially with the all-digital instrument panel, futuristic switches, and awe-inspiring cabin lights.

Although we can’t talk about its longevity as we only had it for a short while, we are confident to say that it is definitely one of the best cars you can buy for around Php 1.3 million. The Ford Territory has a lot of features you can never find in a similarly priced vehicle from a known and reputable brand.

More importantly, despite being a China-made car, there’s not a hint of cheapness or poor quality in this car. In fact, the car screams premium and expensive both inside and out.
