DICT Rejects Calls for SIM Registration Extension

DICT Rejects Calls for SIM Registration Extension

With only a few days before the April 26 deadline for SIM registration, DICT has issued a statement on calls for an extension. In its statement, the DICT reiterated that there’s no need for an extension of SIM Registration beyond April 26.

In its statement, the DICT reiterated that they encourage everyone to register their SIM before the April 26 deadline “to promote the responsible use of SIMs and provide law enforcement agencies the necessary tools to crack down perpetrators.”

This is despite telcos appealing to DICT for an extension for SIM Registration last week. With this, everyone has to catch up with the April 26 deadline to have their SIMs registered.

To help out users, Globe, Smart, and DITO have been aggressive in pushing for SIM registration by mounting assistance booths in malls and far flung areas.

As of April 14, DICT said that the total registered SIM cards has reached 69,828,125 subscribers. The total number of registered SIMs translates to 41.32% of the 168,977,773 SIM cards across the country.

Breaking down the numbers, 5,139,813 registered with DITO; 29,967,532 with Globe; and 34,720,770 with Smart.

Under the SIM Card Registration Act, all telcos are mandated to establish their respective registration platforms to onboard users who present valid identification cards. Those who fail to register will face deactivation of their SIM cards.
