The Philippines Ties With Japan In Global Netflix ISP Speed Index

The Netflix ISP Speed Index is an in-house service available in all countries such as the Philippines. To simplify, it’s a bandwidth measuring system that uses the streaming service’s servers to assess network quality. We’ve seen Netflix do this before with the presence of Fast.com, but this ranking goes beyond and mostly compiles data from real-world performance.

What this means is that data is gathered during heavy traffic hours in order to provide a more realistic perspective under stress and load. We’ll quickly break down the results.

Within the Philippines, the Netflix ISP Speed Index ranks Globe as the number one provider with a speed of 3.6 Mbps. They are also the only company to achieve this number over the past few months, with options such as Converge, PLDT, and SKYCable tied at second place. They aren’t too far behind at 3.4 Mbps, with month-to-month fluctuations dipping down into the 3.2 range. Royal Cable takes last place with 3.0.

It is a tight competition within network companies here in the Philippines, and it seems like the race is just going to be more intense in the coming years. As consumers, this is a win-win situation for us as we get better service with our money.

What’s more surprising is that we actually come close to other countries when it comes to Global averages. The Philippines is in the middle-upper percentile when it comes to connectivity performance under load, which is shocking when you see extremely-developed countries on the list. Even being grouped with technological giants such as Japan is shocking in itself.

It’s definitely exciting to see how much longer it takes for local network architecture to not only match speed in other countries, but reliability and cost-effectiveness as well. With the world moving into Web3, the Metaverse, and other related items, ISPs will have to keep up as they also serve as an integral backbone of a nation’s progress.
