Here’s All The Foreign Telcos That Want In On The PH So Far

The list is pretty long

After wallowing in a duopoly for what seems like forever, Filipinos may finally get their third telco this year. With the release of the the new timeline for the selection of the New Major Player (NMP, AKA third telco) by The Department Of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) and the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC), as well as President Rodrigo Duterte’s signing of the proposed 11th Foreign Investment Negative List that will allow 100% foreign ownership in any internet business, it seems like we’ll finally be getting that third telco.

There’s no shortage of companies that are interested in becoming that third utility either. We’ve compiled a list of foreign telcos that have expressed interest in the Philippines as well as a short profile of each.

KT Corporation

Country of origin: Korea

KT Corporation (formerly Korea Telecom) is South Korea’s largest and oldest telecommunication’s firm. The company is massive, and serves around 90 percent of the country’s fixed-line subscribers, and is South Korea’s 9th largest conglomerate with around 24 trillion won (or around $20 billion) in assets.

LG Uplus Corp

Country of origin: Korea

LG Uplus Corp is a telecom company that’s owned by the LG Corporation, which is also the parent company of well-known electronics firm LG Electronics. It was formed when LG entered the wireless communications market back in 1996, with the name of LG Telecom.

Viettel

Country of origin: Vietnam

Viettel is the largest telecom company in Vietnam, owned and operated by the Vietnamese government, specifically Vietnam’s Ministry of Defense. They’re the current market leaders in Vietnam with a 40.67 market share in their home country. The state-owned company already has experience operating in other countries as well.

Telenor

Country of origin: Norway

Telenor is one of the biggest telcos in the world that’s interested in entering the Philippines and operates in a multitude of companies and territories. According to their Wikipedia page, the company owns networks in 13 countries and operates in 29 countries as well.

KDDI Corp.

Country of origin: Japan

KDDI Corporation is probably the youngest telco on this list, starting operations back in October 1, 2000 after the merger of DDI Corp. (Daini-Denden Inc.), KDD (Kokusai Denshin Denwa) Corp., and IDO Corp. It offers both cellular and fixed-line services, as well as fiber to home services in Japan.

AT&T

Country of origin: USA

AT&T is the world’s largest telecommunications company, and is based in the US. It’s one of the oldest telecommunications companies in the world, starting life out as the Southwestern Bell Telephone Company, a subsidiary of the Bell Telephone Company, founded by Alexander Graham Bell in 1880.

Vodafone

Country of origin: UK

While Vodafone is based in the United Kingdom, the prolific telecommunications company has operations in multiple countries and continents. It owns and operates networks in around 25 countries, and has partner networks in 47 countries. It’s the latest firm to express interest in becoming the Philippines’ third telco.

China Telecom

Country of origin: China

China Telecom was one of the first telecoms company to be explicitly named by the government as a possible third telco. Since the initial frenzy of the announcement late last year, other foreign companies have expressed interest in becoming our third telco.
