Huawei P40, P40 Pro, and P40 Plus: Which one should you get?

Huawei has officially announced its new P40 series of flagships. And unlike before there are now three versions of their flagship: the regular P40, the P40 Pro, and the P40 Pro Plus. So, what differentiates each phone from one another?

While all phones sport the company’s new 50-megapixel ultra-vision camera with an RYYB sensor and f/1.9 aperture lens, it’s only paired with a 16-megapixel ultra-wide camera and an 8-megapixel 3x optical telephoto lens.

The P40 Pro meanwhile has four cameras in total. Aside from the 50-megapixel sensor for photos, it has a 40-megapixel ultra-wide cine camera for videos (f/1.8), a 5x optical telephoto lens with a 12-megapixel RYYB sensor (periscope setup) with an f/3.4 aperture and OIS, as well as a time-of-flight camera for depth information.

The P40 Pro Plus has the most cameras in the series at 5. Aside from the same main sensor, cine sensor and ToF sensor on the P40 Pro, the P40 Pro has a better 10x optical telephoto lens that shoots in 8-megapixels with an f/4.4 aperture and OIS, as well as a 3x optical telephoto lens with an 8-megapixel sensor, f/2.4 aperture and OIS.

Display

The P40 has a smaller 6.1-inch flexible OLED display with a full HD+ resolution. It uses the same pill-shaped, punch-hole camera setup as its more expensive brothers, though the P40 only comes with a lone 32-megapixel f/2.2 front camera. The P40 Pro and P40 Pro Plus have depth sensors and 3D ToF sensors in addition to the front camera.

Speaking of the two phones, the P40 Pro and P40 Pro Plus have essentially the same display – a 6.58-inch, flex OLED panel with a resolution of 2640×1200 (441 PPI) with a 90Hz refresh rate and DCI-P3 HDR capability.

Internals and storage

All three phones run Huawei’s HiSilicon Kirin 990 5G octa-core processor that has 5G capabilities as well as advanced AI capabilities. All three phones also sport Android 10 via EMUI 10.1.

While all three phones can be had in either 128GB or 256GB capacities, the P40 Pro and P40 Pro Plus get the 512GB option for storage. The P40 and P40 Pro also only get 8GB of RAM, while the P40 Pro Plus gets 12GB of RAM.

As for the battery, the P40 comes with 3800mAh and 22.5w fast charging capabilities. The P40 Pro and P40 Pro Plus meanwhile, has 4200mAh as well as ultra-fast 40w wired charging, 27w wireless charging, and 5w reverse wireless charging.

Colors

The P40 and P40 Pro will be available in several colorways, in both glossy and matte varieties.

For glossy colors, the two phones will be available in Ice White, Deep Sea Blue and Black. Matte finishes available for the two phones are Blush Gold and Silver Frost.

The P40 Pro Plus meanwhile will only be available in two colors: Ceramic White and Ceramic Black.

As always availability of colors will vary from country to country.
