Intel sure had a beating when AMD announced its Ryzen 7000 processors last month, so with Raptor Lake, team Blue wants to fire back at AMD’s claims. While AMD’s Ryzen 9 7950X tops out at 5.7Ghz, Intel’s Core i9-13900K (and the GPU-less 13900KF) one-ups team Red’s flagship chip with a maximum clock speed of 5.8Ghz.
Like the Alder Lake chips, Intel continues to use its hybrid architecture design for Raptor Lake, giving in a mix of performance and efficiency cores. In the case of the Core i9-13900K, you are getting 8 performance cores and 16 efficiency cores, while the entry-level Core i5-13600K gets 6 performance cores and 8 efficiency cores. How big of an improvement is Raptor Lake to Alder Lake? Intel claims up to 15% better single-thread performance and up to 41% better multi-thread performance.
Intel claims the 13th gen offers up to 15% better single-threaded performance and up to 41% better multi-threaded performance over the 12th gen. All Raptor Lake chips are based on an updated version of the Intel 7 process (which, by the way, is still based on a 10nm process). While AMD is already pushing for 5nm with the Ryzen 7000 series, Intel is proving a point that they can still eke out better performance while still using a 10nm process.
All six Raptor Lake processors that were announced come with 20 PCIe (up to 16 PCIe 5.0 + 4 PCIe 4.0), along with support for both DDR5-5600 and DDR4-3200 memory. Non-F SKUs come with UHD Graphics 770 Integrated GPU, and all chips are compatible with the newer Z790 chipset motherboards and the previous-gen 600-series motherboards. This means that on paper, one should have an easier time upgrading from Alder Lake to Raptor Lake as compared to upgrading from Ryzen 5000 to Ryzen 7000.
There’s no official pricing for the Raptor Lake chips for now, but the RCP (recommended customer price), which is the retailer price for every 1000 units purchased, for the Core i9-13900K is $589(~Php 34.8k). The actual price is usually higher, so we’re expecting the top-end Alder Lake processor to be around Php 40k.
