LTO Needs Php 2.5B to Produce Delayed Motorcycle Plates

Motorcyclists waiting to get their license plates will need to wait longer it seems, as the Land Transportation Office (LTO) has run into a major snag. The agency revealed that they are facing challenges with the millions of backlogs of official plate releases that have built up over the past few years, with the LTO saying that they need an additional P2.5 billion to finance the production of over 18 million motorcycle plates.

In a virtual meeting on the program Laging Handa, Land Transportation Office (LTO) head Edgar Galvante has shared that the agency is facing different challenges in manufacturing the official plates of millions of registered motorcycles.

LTO Motorcycle Plates

Inumpisahan natin ito para sa motorcycles registered simula ng 2018 pataas. At iyon namang below 2018—meaning 2017 and earlier—hinahangad po nating ma-manufacture a little later. Ang projection natin diyan by 2022 eh ang kailangan nating mai-produce na motorcycle plate is around 18 million,” the LTO chief said.

The main reason behind this delay is the lack of plate manufacturing equipment, which should have been installed by German and Netherland engineers. The COVID-19 outbreak, however, has delayed the project indefinitely.

Now, the agency is looking to outsource the manufacturing of motorcycle plates as manufacturing the plates internally will only cause years of delay and consequently cause higher backlogs.

Subsequently, the agency is hoping that the government could help with the financing of around P2.5 billion to help manufacture all of these plates. “Hindi po kakayanin sa natitirang panahon para matugunan ang pangangailangang ito. Kaya plinano po ng LTO at ng DOTr na iyong pababa po—from 2017 pababa—pagawa na po natin sa ibang mga manufacturers ng plate kung saan kakailanganin po namin ng halagang about P2.5 billion para matugunan po ito,” he added.

Currently, the LTO has released around 3 million motorcycle plates already. The LTO is hoping that with the government’s help, they would be able to complete the releases by mid-2022.
