5G is coming
You don’t need to buy a high-end phone to enjoy the benefits of 5G, at least not if MediaTek has anything to say about it, with the Taiwanese firm officially announcing their 5G Dimensity 800 chipset meant for mid-range phones.
MediaTek’s new chipset can hit download speeds of up to 3.5Gbps and has the ability to tap to slower 4G and 3G networks if need be.
The Dimensity 800 has 2CC carrier aggregation capabilities, as well as a whole host of features you’d expect from a 5G-capable chipset including support both SA and NSA sub-6Ghz networks, Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS) and support for VoNR, delivering voice and data over 5G.
As for the chipset itself, it sports four Cortex-A76 cores running at 2GHz, and four more power-efficient Cortex-A55 cores that can reach 2GHz.
The first phones with MediaTek’s new 5G chipset will be hitting markets in the first half of 2020.
