No Funds Lost? GCash States They Were Not Hacked

After facing an outage earlier for several hours–with people suspecting that GCash was hacked due to reports of unauthorized transactions–GCash has issued a statement and said that no hacking incident has occurred and that no funds were lost.

“We extended our scheduled maintenance to investigate and determined that no hacking occurred,” GCash said in their statement.

Aside from that, GCash assures everyone that “any deduction from a GCash account will be adjusted before 3:00 PM today.” Following their statement, GCash announced at around 10 AM that they have restored its services after being under maintenance since 12 midnight today (May 9).

“We wish to further assure the affected customers that their funds remain safe and secure. We would also like to remind customers never to share their OTP and MPIN.”

According to earlier reports, several customers lost as much as Php 50,000 to unauthorized transactions, where the money was allegedly transferred to Eastwest and AUB bank accounts. Among those affected are 300 TNVS drivers as said by Laban TNVS President Jun de Leon in a TeleRadyo Interview. Just like what happened to affected customers, de Leon said that the affected TNVS drivers allegedly had their OTPs and MPINs bypassed.

Following the incident, de Leon said that they have reached out to the BSP to freeze the East West Bank and Asia United Bank (AUB) bank accounts in question–where the funds were allegedly transferred.
