Nokia Unveils C21 and Plus Models At MWC 2022

With MWC 2022 currently in full swing, the world’s largest manufacturers are dropping bombs left and right. HMD Global has joined in the fray by announcing 3 all-new Nokia smartphones so far: the Nokia C21, C21 Plus, and C2 2nd Edition. As expected, these are all budget models to cater to the mass market. We’ll break down what each one offers down below.

Starting off with the vanilla Nokia C21, it comes with a 6.5-inch 1600×720 display, coming out at around 269 PPI with a 20:9 aspect ratio. The front of the phone is accented by a waterdrop-style notch, which is heavily outdated by today’s standards but is still acceptable in the budget range. The rear holds just the 8-megapixel shooter and flash, as well as the round fingerprint scanner.

The processor on board is the Unisoc SC9863A chipset (octa-core 28nm Cortex A55 @ 1.6GHz with a PowerVR GPU). Originally a SoC launched in November of 2018, we’ll have to see with our eyes how this device performs by 2022 standards. Assisting with multitasking duties are 2GB and 3GB RAM options, while storage will be set at 32GB or 64GB expandable via microSD card. This hardware sips juice from a 3,000 mAh battery with no fast charging support whatsoever.

As expected, the C21 Plus kicks things up a notch. While the rest of the specifications are identical to the Nokia C21, the rear setup is replaced with a 13-megapixel camera with a 2-megapixel depth sensor for better shots. There is also an additional variant that includes 4GB of RAM, which we believe to be the bare minimum for a midrange experience in this day and age.

What’s unexpected is that the C21 Plus comes with 2 battery options: a lighter 4,000 mAh capacity and the heavier 5,050 mAh. These are probably targeted towards different types of users but either way, charging power is amped up to 10W.

The current roster of Android Go devices.

Software-wise, both devices ship with the Android 11 Go Edition which is a step behind the upcoming 12th iteration. There was no mention of future Android versions coming to these smartphones but 2 years of security patches were verbally promised.

Worthy of a quick mention is the cheapest model here, the Nokia C2 2nd Edition. There aren’t really any notable specifications for this phone, but just in case you wanted to see the sheet: 5.7-inch FWVGA display, MediaTek processor, 2GB RAM, 32GB storage, and a 2,400 mAh battery. Those specs are considered the bottom of the barrel but we expect the price to be well below 100 euros anyways.

These devices will be shipped worldwide except Europe, where patent disputes have seen HMD Global take a step back.
