Qualcomm Rumored To Launch 150W Quick Charge On Next Generation Snapdragon SoCs

Chip giant Qualcomm is rumored to be working on 150-watt (150W) quick charge technology. Initially leaked by Digital Chat Station over Weibo, this new fast-charging tech is set to debut in the next generation of flagship Snapdragon SoCs. These new processors are reported to bear the name “Snapdragon 8 Gen 1,” a new direction from the company’s naming themes up to this point.

For reference, this trumps all commercially-available rapid charging options as of the moment, including Qualcomm’s own Quick Charge 5. The closest competitor as of the time of writing is Xiaomi’s recently released 11T Pro with their latest 120W HyperCharge technology. With cutting-edge tech and security features in place, the phone can safely charge its 5000 mAh battery from 0 to 100 in an advertised 17 minutes.

Most reports released as of the moment indicate that the Snapdragon 150W quick charge technology will not be available in the first batch of Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 devices. This can be attributed to the irrefutable thermodynamic fact that higher wattage charging leads to more heat, and as a result, more measures need to be set in place to prevent accelerated battery degradation or device breakage. The estimated timeline for this to make its way into devices would be the second half of 2022.

An experimental concept Xiaomi displayed earlier this year featured 200W charging in 8 minutes, albeit featuring a modified 11T Pro not available to the public. On-the-go power users definitely can’t afford to have the lights go out on their devices, and these companies are answering that call.
